Project Description

Villa Nurseries are a large food producer in the North Of England producing over 2 million kilos of tomatoes each year in 20 acres of greenhouses. As part of the company strategy to source 100% of their energy needs from renewable sources they installed 2 X 2.5 megawatt biomass boilers.

Biomass Silo Systems were then contracted to supply 2 X 90m3 waste wood silos capable of storing a mixture of waste wood that would be topped up with wood pellet in times of high demand.

Both silos supplied were 4.5m diameter and 9.0m high with a 45 deg conical base and agitator type extractor fitted at the bottom which would allow connection to a boiler feed conveyor supplied by the boiler installer. A reinforced roof with walkway was fitted to allow access to the filter unit which transfers the waste wood into the silo and an access ladder and safety railings were fitted to allow safe access to the roof.

ATEX explosion panels were also fitted on the roof to mitigate the risk of a dust explosion causing damage to the silo.

Overall this project was a huge success with Villa Nurseries enjoying massively reduced energy costs and saving an estimated 4000 tonnes of carbon per year.
